Ayetoro, the Sinking Community:
About Ayetoro: Ayetoro is one of the communities in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State. Once known for its epithet ‘‘The Happy City’, the last three decades of transgressive mud-coast has led to coastal erosion and sea incursion which have in turn changed the identity of Ayetoro. These alarming catastrophes linked to crude oil exploration by multinational corporations and the influence of climate change are gravitating into disasters and existential crises. Prior the arrival of oil multinationals, Ayetoro had a predictable weather pattern, the rainy season was always between April and November while the dry season was between December and March with an average precipitation of 164.8cm but now the tides are changing, temperature and humidity are increasing between 28-30 degrees and 60-100% respectively. These variations have had a massive blow on the agricultural and food system, livelihood, and health of the residents of Ayetoro.
